DAVID KOOY - THE CONCUSSION PAINTINGS January - June 2023

In October 2022 I was in a serious bike crash and suffered a concussion that has diminished my functioning. Recovery is slow. These paintings are pretty obviously about the disability and the way a brain injury masks and distorts our former true selves…and the anger, fear and frustration inherent in that realization. As usual, they have a lot of paint on them and display my love for color, motion and my willingness to embrace dramatic emotions.

Neurology 101- 24 x 24 Oil on Canvas $625

Heart says YES, Brain says NO - 36 x 36 Oil on Canvas $775

Neuronic Fireworks - 36 x36 Oil on Canvas $525

Winter of the Neurons - 24 x 18 Oil on Canvas $375

Rituals will Keep Me Safe 24 x 30 Oil on Canvas $375.

Distorted Diwani - 48 x 48 Oil, Oil Stick, Gesso $1150

THE COVID/GEORGE FLOYD PAINTINGS March - December 2022

The Concussive Force Of Darkness

$1950

2020 - 48x48 - Oil, Oil stick, Graphite, Varnish on a found canvas.

White beveled frame.

This is about institutionalized violence and the crushing force it exerts on all of us, whether we are the direct victims or not. The blows send shockwaves that affect us all.

The Thinnest Veneer of Civilization

$1750

2020 - Oil, oil stick and graphite on found plywood.

48 X 48 - Mount to wall.

Unframed, mount to wall

The smooth white top layer is so thin in areas that the scary amorphously menacing forms underneath are revealed. A police officer murdered a man while 2 of his colleagues stood and watched. The barbarism was unashamedly celebrated by many right wing people who genuinely found it satisfactory. The scrim we know as civilization is thin indeed.

Christmas in Flames

$375.

2020 - 16x20. Oil, oil stick and varnish on canvas.

Unframed.

I love Christmas and the green and red colors that represent it, but Christmas 2020 was not a time of celebration for most. I even ripped a hole in the canvas.

American Hellscape at Dusk

$375 SOLD

2020 - 18x24 - Oil, varnish on canvas.

Unframed

There was a lot going on in June of 2020. Watching the protests out my window and the further police violence meted out in response to the BLM/George Floyd murder protests caused me to wonder if the sun is setting on our grand experiment.

Do Not Touch Me. I Need To Be Touched.

$375

2020 - 18x24 - Oil on canvas.

Unframed

I (we all) lived in terror of proximity to other humans, wondering if it was a deadly threat to be in proximity to even our closest friends…wondering where they might have been. This only amplified my unmet need for closeness, intimacy and touch in an environment of utter paucity.

My Orphan Life in the Time of COVID.

$250.

2020 - 8x10. Oil, oil stick and varnish on canvas.

Unframed.

Although I am absolutely an adult, I have lost both my parents in recent years; I am an orphan. I have never felt so much like I needed my Mom. The painting is on the floor as a representation of the abject pathos of it all. The painting rests on a powder blue linen napkin that provides some soft comfort and reminders.

Sometimes The Facade is Quite Beautiful

$1275 SOLD

2020 - 30x40 - Oil, Oil stick, Gesso, Pencil, Dirt and Varnish over a previously completed work on canvas.

Silver Leaf Floater Frame

This is painted over a very dark and textural painting responding to some terrible events in my life. I thought about how the difficulties we endure can contribute to heightened empathy, ability to make connection and appreciation for our other gifts. So the top layers are in fact quite complex, beautiful and very lusterous…and they rest upon the dark events represented by the lower layers of built-up paint and gesso.

Maybe It Will Get Better; Maybe It Already Has.

$1750. SOLD

2021 - 36x36. Oil, oil stick and varnish on canvas.

Walnut floater frame.

After we got the vaccine, we didn’t know what would come next but I felt strongly that getting that shot was profound evidence that things are already better.

The Joy of Quietude

$1950

2020 - 48x60 - 0il, pencils, oil stick on canvas.

Silver leaf floater frame.

After the year of COVID terror, I made this extremely restrained but very big painting about calm and subtle beauty. There are about 100 virtually invisible white lines rising from the bottom representing the forces of goodness that may sometimes be imperceptible to us.

Some Days Really Are Better

$1750 SOLD

2020 - 48x48 - Oil, oil stick, pencils on canvas.

Solid walnut floater frame.

Some days really are better, and I hope this captures that feeling of comfort, ease and joy of those memorable days.
